Price the trip, not the room
A lower airport-hotel rate can be erased by extra transportation. Model airport to hotel, hotel to terminal, any downtown sightseeing trip, parking or shuttle charges, and per-person cruise-shuttle pricing. Then compare that total with one airport-to-downtown transfer and one hotel-to-pier transfer.
The same applies to a premium waterfront room. Its value may be the avoided terminal transfer, usable waterfront time, and simpler luggage morning—not merely the bed.
Use an honest time test
Count only hours the traveler can realistically use after landing, baggage claim, airport pickup, hotel check-in, meals, sleep, and the cruise line's arrival window. If that leaves an afternoon or evening, downtown can turn logistics into vacation. If it leaves only sleep, an airport hotel may be the calmer choice.
SEA is about fifteen miles from downtown, and the Port gives a typical 30–45 minute drive depending on traffic. Link reaches downtown but does not continue directly to either cruise terminal, so luggage and the last mile still matter.
Families and mobility needs change the result
Door-to-door effort matters more than theoretical walkability for families with child seats, travelers using mobility equipment, and groups carrying several bags. A downtown hotel can still be best, but reserve the correct vehicle and avoid planning around stairs, steep grades, or a crowded transit transfer.
An airport hotel is not automatically accessible merely because it is close to SEA. Confirm the airport shuttle, accessible room, loading method, operating hours, and cruise-day transfer separately.
The return flight is a different decision
Do not let an early flight after the cruise force an airport hotel before the cruise. The pre-cruise and post-cruise nights solve different problems. A downtown pre-stay can maximize Seattle time; a separate airport night after the cruise can protect an early departure.
Eligible same-day flyers may be able to use Port Valet after disembarkation, sending bags directly to participating airlines. That can make post-cruise city time easier without booking another hotel, but eligibility and flight cutoffs must be confirmed aboard the ship.

Choose the hotel first. Then price the exact airport and terminal legs.
Use the actual hotel, terminal, date, party, and luggage count. A generic “cruise transfer” estimate hides the decisions that change the trip.
