Where to stay before a Seattle cruise

Seattle has two cruise terminals with very different surroundings. Pier 66 sits on the downtown waterfront. Pier 91 sits on Smith Cove north of downtown. A hotel that is excellent for one can be merely acceptable for the other, so confirm the terminal on the Port schedule or with the cruise line before paying a nonrefundable rate.

This one step prevents the most common planning error: treating “Seattle cruise port” as a single point. Norwegian and Oceania commonly use Pier 66, while many other major lines use Pier 91, but schedules can change and the sailing-specific assignment controls.

A downtown overnight removes a commute from the part of the trip meant for enjoyment. Pike Place Market, the waterfront, restaurants, Seattle Aquarium, Olympic Sculpture Park, and Seattle Center can fit into a short stay without a separate airport-to-city outing. Visit Seattle describes the central core as compact and places Pike Place about a ten-minute walk from Pier 66.

An airport hotel optimizes only one edge of the journey. It can simplify a late landing, but the next morning still requires a trip to Pier 66 or Pier 91. If you also want to see Seattle, you add a round trip into the city. Downtown therefore wins when the traveler has time and energy to use the location; it does not automatically win after midnight, with fragile mobility, or when the cruise transfer is the only objective.

For Pier 66, waterfront and Pike Place hotels can support a genuine walkable plan. Seattle Marriott Waterfront is across from the Bell Street complex, while The Edgewater reports a 0.2-mile distance. Hotels uphill near Pike Place trade the shortest luggage roll for immediate access to the market and downtown dining.

For Pier 91, do not chase a hotel that merely looks close on a map. Smith Cove is an industrial terminal, and the Port describes ordinary bus access as inconvenient. Lower Queen Anne and Seattle Center can be smart because they are enjoyable and remain a short vehicle trip from the pier—not because they eliminate the final ride.

A six-block distance is not the same experience with two cruise bags, a stroller, rain, a steep grade, or a wheelchair. Treat walking as an option, not a promise. Ask whether everyone in the party can manage the grade and surface, and keep a vehicle plan when the answer is uncertain.

Both terminals currently advertise same-day luggage storage. Pier 66 also lists early checked-bag drop for specified Norwegian ships. Eligible disembarking passengers may use Port Valet to send bags from the ship to participating airlines at SEA. These services can create extra city time, but eligibility, prices, deadlines, and participating carriers must be checked for the actual sailing.
